Delicious Add-Ins for the Perfect Homemade Hot Chocolate

There are few things as comforting as a cup of hot chocolate, and with Legacy’s Hot Cocoa Mix, you are guaranteed quality along with taste. Unlike many mass-produced brands that list a paragraph of chemicals you cannot pronounce as their ingredients, our Hot Cocoa Mix only contains two ingredients – cocoa rouge cocoa powder and evaporated cane juice sugar.

Looking to jazz up your hot cocoa? Here are a few suggestions to experiment with the next time you prepare a cup.

Cinnamon Sticks

Cinnamon sticks can be tossed into hot cocoa to give it a warm, earthy, and spicy flavor. Just make sure you don't overdo it -- even a single cinnamon stick can become quite strong when steeped.

Vanilla Ice Cream

Add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream to your hot chocolate to give it a richer, creamier texture. If you don't stir, the vanilla ice cream will create a frothy layer on top, not unlike whipped cream.

Coconut Milk

Traditional milk isn't the only thing that can be used to make hot cocoa. Swap it out for coconut milk for a unique taste experience that's got more than a hint of tropical flavor. Almond milk is another popular alternative for those who are dairy-free.

Peppermint Canes

A peppermint candy cane swirled into hot chocolate will give it a subtle, sweet, minty flavor and function as a stirring stick. You can also add a small drop of mint extract to the hot cocoa; just keep in mind that it will be more potent.

Peanut Butter

Chocolate and peanut butter are like good friends; they always go well together. Stir a spoonful of peanut butter directly into your hot cocoa for a rich, creamy experience.

Like the hot stuff? Chocolate and pepper pair fantastically. Add a small amount of jalapeno (habanero or cayenne if you're brave) to your next cup of hot cocoa for a little heat and bite.

Just make sure to go easy on the pepper: the heat of the hot cocoa will warm the spice, making it a little hotter than you might expect.

Have you ever had orange-flavored chocolate? While just dropping orange juice into a hot cocoa mix isn't likely to yield fantastic results, tossing an orange peel into your drink is. This will give your hot cocoa a light, citrusy taste.

Whipped Cream

Whipped cream is a classic choice for hot chocolate, which helps to add a creamy and luxurious texture. You can top the whipped cream with any of the other add-ins that we’ve listed already.

Marshmallows evoke childhood memories of a cup of hot chocolate after a long day of playing in the snow. They are another classic add-in that can add a little whimsy to your hot chocolate. They will melt and add a creamy texture.

Coffee or Espresso

Need a little chocolatey boost? Add a smidge of coffee or espresso to your hot chocolate for a little extra pep in your step!

Sipping Chocolate

Another way to boost the chocolate intensity is to add a little sipping chocolate to your hot chocolate. Sipping chocolate can be enjoyed on its own or added to your favorite beverage, including hot chocolate. Not only is sipping chocolate creamy, but it will also make your hot chocolate even more chocolatey.

Make it Irish

For those older chocolate lovers, you can always make your hot chocolate a little Irish. Just add a little Irish cream liquor, like Bailey’s, to your hot chocolate for an extra little kick.
